Causes Of Obesity

Obesity is observed in individuals who are fed with excess calories frequently and have mobility and exercise insufficiency during daily life.  Besides, obesity may be associated with many causes such as genetic predisposition, underlying endocrine diseases or psychiatric disorders and antipsychotic drugs used.  Although the general approach in the society is that obese people have lower metabolic rates, this is valid for very limited patients.  In general, patients with obesity or morbid obesity consume more energy than normal individuals to meet needs of their increased body weight.  Therefore, basal metabolism rates of patients with obesity or morbid obesity have increased.

Technology used in today’s world reduces use of individual body power during the daily life.  Especially, common and easily accessible transportation vehicles are considered to be closely related with increase on obesity incidence.

Although wide social studies should be continued to confirm the results scientifically, it has been reported in a study which includes stimulating suggestions and detection for increase on obesity that other factors may contribute into obesity and evolvement of the obesity.  First of these factors is insufficient sleep or inability to maintain a perpetual sleeping order which seems an inevitable result of crowded and stressful city life.  Modifications which are caused by endocrinologic stimulations created by consumption of foods with different additives or foods affected from environmental pollution or foods including genetically modified organisms (GMO) especially on lipid metabolism.  Decrease on smoking which is supported by campaigns may cause increase on obesity involuntarily.  Because, smoking prevents hunger stimulation.  Drug intake such as antidepressants prescribed for stress in particular contribute to obesity.  Relationships of obese individuals with other obese people cause further generations being over obesity limits both by effect of genetic and environmental factors from their family environment.

When our country is assessed separately, obesity has been started to be perceived as a considerable healthcare problem for the last decades in particular.  Rapid increase on urbanization, replacement of villager and worker class who work by physical strength with a working class who produce work through efforts on the desk and computer environment decreases daily energy consumption while habits on eating junk food associated with stress and business increase energy intake and disrupts the balance in favor of lipoidosis.   Our traditional diet is rich in carbohydrates whereas excessively fatty food consumption increases.  Less physical activity stands as another triggering factor.
